A new bill has been passed by the Sindh Assembly on Friday that allows Hindu widows to remarry and also file for separation.
The bill was presented by Pakistan Muslim League-Functional,parliamentary leader Nand Kumar Goklani. Senior Parliamentary Minister Nisar Khuhro and Khwaja Izharul Hasan supported the bill.
The bill, titled the Sindh Hindu Marriage Act 2016 was amended under which both husband and wife can now file for separation. The Hindu widows can also remarry after a period of six months after their husbands’ deaths, local media reported.
The Sindh Assembly was informed that during the past years, matrimonial issues in the Hindu community were increasing and a large number of cases were seen in Sindh. Goklani added that the Hindu women suffered a lot because of non-availability of law, and outdated customs and traditions that do not allow them to remarry in Sindh.
