The Supreme Court (SC) suspended on Tuesday the Senate membership of former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

The apex court gave the suspension order during the court proceedings today. Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that Dar appears to be fine whenever he comes on TV but when it is time for him to appear before the court, he becomes ill. The court then adjourned the hearing till June, local media reported.

Ishaq Dar allowed to contest Senate polls

On March 9, a petition by Pakistan Peoples Party's Nawazish Pirzada requested the top court to suspend Lahore High Court's verdict in allowing Dar to contest the March 3 Senate elections. Dar had won technocrat seat in the Senate elections.

The petitioner said that Dar had been declared as a proclaimed offender by an accountability court and therefore, he could not be elected as a Senate member.

Dar has been absconding in corruption case hearing since last year and is currently in London for his treatment. The National Accountability Bureau has filed corruption reference against Dar for owing assets beyond his known source of income, after the Panama Papers revelation.
