HAMDARD Dawakhana was established in Dehli, undivided India on August 1, 1906. It was established by Hakim Abdul Majeed; started as a family run business with a clinic and a household manufactory. In 1907, the world famous drink Rooh Afza was first made, (now about 106 years old).
On June 28, 1948, Hamdard Dawakhana was established in Pakistan, by Hakim Mohammed Said (younger son of Hakim Abdul Majeed). On April 1, 1953, it was declared an Islamic Waqf (all the income of Hamdard is to be spent in the name of Allah; in the areas of health, education, promotion of Unani System of Medicine, Philanthropic works to help poor and masses ,widows, orphans and scholarships etc.
On May 17 1953, a new proper production facility was established in Karachi which is still working with the head office. On August 14, 1958, Hamdard Tibbiya College was established in Karachi to produce quality Unani Medicine Physicians called Tabibs /Hakeems.
In 1963, first mobile free dispensary was started by Hamdard (with free Hakeem consultation and free medicine). Now total no. of mobile dispensaries throughout Pakistan are 16; covering 10 cities of Pakistan, serving approx 500,000 patients/year. On February 1, 1973 a new building for head office (Al-Majeed, Hamdard Centre) was established as well as a separate facility to Manufacturing Rooh Afza started in Karachi. On February 21 1983 a new factory was inaugurated in Lahore to produce Rooh Afza and some medicines.
On March 14 1990, a new factory was inaugurated in Peshawar to produce Rooh Afza and some medicines. In February 1995 a new facility by the name of Hamdard Industrial complex (phase-I) was inaugurated in outskirts of Karachi spread over 32 acre of land. Hamdard Laboratories Waqf Pakistan is now spread over Pakistan which manufacturing facilities in Karachi, Lahore & Peshawar have a working strength of over 1500 people.
Hamdard has its own offices in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi & Peshawar. As well as its agents spread all over Pakistan. On June 3, 2005, Hamdard Laboratories became ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management System) certified for its activities with regard to Manufacturing, Sales &Export of Herbal dietary Supplement/Food products. On May 2007, Hamdard was awarded for ISO 22000-2005 (Food Safety Management System) certificate for Rooh Afza.
On February 18 2011, Rooh Afza was awarded Pakistan Standards And Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), Government of Pakistan award. On July 3 2012, Rooh Afza was awarded HALAL certificate upon meeting HALAL requirement according to Islamic Sharia. Rooh Afza has the distinction of the recipient of the BEST EXPORT TROPHY AWARD for the last 18 years (1996-2012).
Our Founder Hakim Mohammed Said was martyred on October 17, 1998. Since then his daughter Mrs Sadia Rashid is working as Head/Chairperson of Hamdard laboratories (Waqf) and President Hamdard Foundation Pakistan and she has now assumed the responsibility of Chancellorship of Hamdard University.
HAMDARD FOUNDATION PAKISTAN On January 1, 1964, Hamdard Foundation Pakistan was established as a wing to control and regulate the funds generated by Hamdard Laboratories Waqf.
On December 15, 1983, the concept of Madinat al Hikmah (a city of Education, Science and culture was brought forwarded by Hakim Mohammed Said. And the foundation stone was laid by thethen President of Pakistan Late General Muhammad Zia ul Haq. This city is spread over 260 acre land, wherein Hamdard Public School, Hamdard College and Hamdard University were planned.
On June 3, 1991, Hamdard University was granted charter by the then President of Pakistan, Late Mr Ghulam Ishaq Khan. Now, Madinat al Hikmah, comprises of Hamdard University, the Largest General Private University of Pakistan with 7 faculties, with an enrolment of more than 7,000 students. 1. Hamdard Al-Majeed College of Eastern Medicine (BEMS degrees for Tibb-e-Unani) and associated Shifa ul Mulk Memorial Unani Hospital.
2. Hamdard College of Medicine (for MBBS & BDS program) and associated Hamdard University General Hospital & Hamdard Dental Hospital.
3. Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences (for BBA, MBA programs). 4. Hamdard Faculty of Science & Technology (for engineering and Computer Sciences ), BE, BS, ME,MS, Ph D degrees).
5. Hamdard Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (for B.Ed & M.Ed,M.phil, Ph.D). 6. Hamdard Faculty of Law (B.Law).
7. Hamdard Faculty of Pharmacy (for Pharm-D degrees). 8. Dr Hafiz Mohammad Ilyas Institute of pharmacology & Herbal Science (for advanced study and research in the fields of Pharmacology & Herbal Sciences, to prepare candidates for M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees).
9. Environment Studies Centre. (An Institute for Environmental Science in Hamdard University to impart education of environmental sciences and to conduct researches on environmental issues. eg waste management, leaf would techniques, energy conservation, solar water heating, rainwater re-use, and wildlife gardening etc.
10. Centre for Horticulture (A beautiful garden at Madinat al-Hikmah spread over 40 acres and flanked by the campus is ideal for the project of cultivating medicinal plants. Hamdard has its own Hamdard Intermediate Colleges (Science & Commerce) more than 200 students.
Hamdard has its own Hamdard Public School, more than 1500 students. A unique institution to this city is Hamdard Village School, which caters for the education of village's children which are given free education with reading/working material even the uniform is free. Students' strength about 680 children from class-I to class-X.
