Medical expert Dr Qaiser talking to private news channel said, heat stroke, the most severe form of dehydration, occurs when the body could not adequately cool itself. The risk of heat stroke can be high if the proper precaution is not taken.
The body normally can cool itself down by sweating, but under certain conditions, sweating cannot work quickly enough. The body temperature then raised rapidly, leading to potential damage to the brain or other vital organs, he said.
Heatstroke is less common, but more serious. It can put a strain on the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, and can be life-threatening.
Expert warn heat exhaustion or heatstroke can develop quickly or gradually over several hours or days.
He said: “If you’re out and about on the hottest day of the heatwave try and to keep in the shade, stay hydrated and top up sun protection throughout the day.
“The classic signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dizziness and headache if you’re suffering from either find somewhere cool and drink plenty of fluids. If your symptoms don’t get any better and you’re concerned, seek medical attention,” he added.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include feeling faint or dizzy, tired and weak, decrease the blood pressure, cause muscle cramps, sweating, an intense third, a fast pulse and urinating less than usual.
“Beginning stages of mild heat illness can present itself as painful cramps in the stomach, arm or leg muscles,” Qaiser said. “Cramping is caused by intense exercise in the heat without properly replacing fluids and electrolytes.”
Taking a cool shower or moving to an air-conditioned space will be more effective to cool body temperatures and to prevent heat-related illness.
Expert said that if heat exhaustion was left untreated people did not drink enough or cool their skin heat stroke could develop which caused confusion, disorientation, seizures and loss of consciousness.
Other factors that can limit the body’s ability to regulate temperature include fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation and sunburns.
Parents need to make sure children get plenty of opportunities to be cooled and are drinking liquids. In any heat exhaustion situation Dr. says go with water or keep yourself hydrated, he concluded.
