Jordi Turull obtained 64 votes in favour, 65 against and four abstentions, falling short of an absolute majority in the 135-seat Catalan parliament needed to win.

He will face a second vote in two days when just a simple majority is needed to win but will have to appear before a judge on Friday who may remand him in custody over his role in Catalonia´s independence drive.
