The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Bahadurabad faction announced on Thursday, that it will support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate in the contest for the Senate's opposition leader.

Addressing the media alongside PTI leaders, Rabita Committee member Faisal Sabzwari said “A delegation of PTI came to us, seeking support for their candidate in the contest for the Senate's opposition leader. So we have decided to support the PTI’s candidate.”

Sabzwari further said that although they respected Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate Senator Sherry Rehman, they did not support her as she was a member of PPP.

PPP nominates Sherry Rehman as opposition leader in Senate

On Wednesday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had nominated Senator Rehman for position of opposition leader at the Senate. PTI  however, did not support PPP's decision and has plans of nominating a candidate from their own party. Although PTI has not officially announced its candidate, Azma Swati has reportedly been finalized by the party.

The PPP won 20 seats in the Senate whereas, the PTI has 12 members. After the chairman and deputy chairman’s elections, the members of the opposition parties will be voting for the leader of the house and opposition.
