Pakistan welcomes progress on Gaza Peace Plan, backs disarmament process

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday welcomed the latest developments under the Board of Peace towards implementing the disarmament process envisaged in the Gaza Peace Plan, expressing hope that the progress would pave the way for fulfilling all commitments under the initiative.

In a statement released on X, the prime minister also commended the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye, saying the countries deserved “special appreciation” for helping achieve the breakthrough.

The statement said the progress, made under US President Donald Trump’s leadership, represented “a significant achievement for the Board of Peace.”

PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the latest developments would be followed by concrete steps to implement all commitments outlined in the Gaza Peace Plan.

Reaffirming its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, the premier said it hoped the efforts would ultimately lead to the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through “a credible, time-bound political process” in line with international legitimacy and relevant United Nations resolutions.

He reiterated support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

The statement came after reports that Hamas had agreed in principle to disarm under a US-backed framework as part of the Gaza Peace Plan, following mediation by the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye.

The proposal envisages a phased implementation of security and political commitments aimed at advancing a broader settlement to the conflict.
