KARACHI: Rising golf prodigy Omar Khalid Hussain scripted a monumental chapter in Pakistan’s golfing history on Sunday, becoming the first-ever amateur golfer to win the prestigious Sindh Open Golf Championship.

Competing against a stellar field of top national professionals at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club (DACGC), the 21-year-old amateur showcased nerves of steel under punishing conditions.

Defying extremely high winds and navigating notoriously tricky greens, Omar carded a breathtaking final-round score of 5-under-par 67 to clinch the title by a two-stroke margin.

Omar finished the 54-hole championship with an overall stunning aggregate score of 209, finishing at 7-under-par. Professional golfer Minhaj Maqsood Wariach mounted a strong challenge but had to settle for second place overall, finishing two strokes behind the champion at 211 (-5).

While his victory over the seasoned professionals sent shockwaves through the leaderboards, Omar’s dominance within the amateur category was nothing short of a master class. He blew past his peer group to win the amateur title by a massive 13 strokes.

Sharan Ali secured the runner-up spot among the amateurs with a score of 6-over-par, while the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Rayan Ahmed claimed third place at 8-over-par.

For those tracking his meteoric rise, Omar’s historic victory at DACGC comes as no surprise. The big-hitting youngster has developed a distinct knack for shattering long-standing records. He first burst into the national spotlight at just 16 years old when he became the youngest-ever winner of the Pakistan National Amateur Golf Championship, taming the field with maturity well beyond his years.

Building on that momentum, he went on to become the youngest-ever Pakistan No. 1 amateur golfer.

Omar’s trailblazing feats are not confined to domestic circuits. He remains the only Pakistani golfer to ever win a professional title on American soil. Making history in Evansville, Indiana, Omar captured the Fendrich Open trophy, matching up against a top-tier field of professionals in the United States and securing the title with a spectacular 14-under-par aggregate across 36 holes, firing rounds of 61 and 65.

Currently competing in NCAA Division I—the highest tier of collegiate sports in the United States—Omar has consistently raised Pakistan’s flag on the global stage.

He recently made history yet again by becoming the first Pakistani golfer to earn NCAA All-Conference honors after a brilliant podium finish at the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Men’s Golf Championship in Illinois. Following two standout seasons at the University of Evansville, the young star is officially headed to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, this August after finalizing his transfer to join the Bruins for the upcoming season.

His impressive global resume includes several other notable international milestones. He is the first and only Pakistani golfer to make the cut at a United States Golf Association (USGA) event, achieving the feat at the iconic US Junior Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes, Oregon.

Domestically, he also holds the record for winning the Faldo Series Pakistan title by an unprecedented, record-breaking margin of 40 strokes.

On the regional stage, he secured a spectacular fourth-place finish at the highly competitive Qatar Open Golf Championship in Doha, and has proudly represented Pakistan at the Asian Games, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, and the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy.

Omar’s extraordinary triumph at the Sindh Open reinforces his status as the brightest future prospect for Pakistan golf as he continues his journey toward the elite ranks of the sport.
