ISLAMABAD: In the wake of worsening security situation in Balochistan, the National Assembly’s interior panel has decided to convene a meeting in the provincial capital of Quetta in the coming days to review the matter.
The development surfaces on the heels of recent terrorism incidents in Balochistan that have resulted in the loss of lives of numerous security personnel as well as civilians.
In the meeting of the NA Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control, under the chairmanship of Raja Khurram Nawaz, the members discussed the prevailing law and order situation in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Friday.
Some panel members proposed an in camera briefing on Balochistan situation at Parliament House, but majority supported holding a separate meeting in Quetta to assess the ground situation and formulate recommendations accordingly.
The committee finally decided to convene a meeting in Quetta in the coming days to review the law and order situation in Balochistan, and make appropriate recommendations.
The NA panel also voiced serious concern over the situation in AJK and urged the government to resolve the matter through dialogue with the protestors instead of resorting to use of force.
The committee deferred the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2026 on the grounds that the two bills required detailed deliberations in the coming days.
The panel also took up the agenda item regarding the engagement of consultants for preparing a feasibility study on the regularisation and upgradation of illegal housing schemes and settlements in Islamabad.
The NA committee urged the government to formulate a practical regulatory framework for existing settlements while ensuring effective measures to prevent future illegal developments.
Chairman Capital Development (CDA) Sohail Ashraf informed the committee that the CDA was ready to deal with this issue that required an appropriate policy framework and necessary approvals for implementation.
The committee members; Anjum Aqeel Khan, Naseer Abbas, Shakir Awan, Shahbaz Babar, Syed Rafiullah, Nabeel Gabol, Abdul Qadir Patel, Jamal Raisani, Rana Ansar, Ijaz-ul-Haq, and Khushal Khan Kakar, as well State Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry, State Law Minister Aqeel Malik and senior officials from the departments concerned attended the meeting.
