India’s water aggression: PPP to hold Karachi-wide rallies on 12th

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will hold protest rallies on Sunday (July 12) in all districts of Karachi against what it describes as India’s “water aggression” and the alleged violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

This announcement was made by President PPP Karachi Division and Sindh Minister Saeed Ghani on Friday.

In a video message, Ghani said the demonstrations would be organised on the directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari under the slogan “Marsoon Marsoon, Sindhu Na Desoon” (“We may die, but we will not surrender the Indus”).

He said the rallies would be attended by senior PPP leaders, members of the party’s provincial and Karachi chapters, elected representatives, office-bearers, workers and citizens to register what he stamped a united protest against India’s actions.

Ghani alleged that India was violating the Indus Waters Treaty through alleged water aggression and reiterated Pakistan’s position that the treaty, brokered by the World Bank, does not permit either signatory to suspend or unilaterally terminate its provisions.

Referring to Article XII of the treaty, he maintained that there was no legal mechanism allowing one party to unilaterally set aside the agreement and urged India to fully comply with its obligations under the accord.

“The Indus Waters Treaty must be respected in letter and spirit to preserve peace and stability in the region,” Saeed Ghani said.

He warned that any attempt to undermine the treaty could further heighten tensions between the two neighbouring countries and disrupt regional peace.

Calling on party workers and the public to participate in large numbers, Saeed Ghani said the demonstrations would convey Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard its water rights under international agreements.
