LAHORE: Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Punjab President Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Friday said the party’s public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan on July 25 would be a decisive test of the PPP’s political standing in Punjab, urging workers to put aside differences and ensure the event’s success.

Speaking at a ceremony at the party’s Johar Town office, Ashraf said the enthusiasm shown by workers had convinced him that the rally would be a success. “Whenever Lahore rises, the name of the Pakistan Peoples Party echoes across the world,” he said. The ceremony was held to review preparations for the July 25 rally, launch the PPP Lahore website, and hold a meeting with office-bearers from the city’s towns.

Ashraf was welcomed by Lahore Divisional President Faisal Mir and General Secretary Dr Ayesha Shaukat, while Imran Dogar briefed participants on the newly launched website, stating that 66,946 members had already registered on the platform.

Addressing party workers, Ashraf praised Faisal Mir’s decision to hold the rally at the historic Minar-e-Pakistan venue and expressed confidence that the event would attract a large crowd. He urged workers to mobilise their families, friends and supporters rather than attending alone, saying he would personally march while carrying the party flag.

He directed party workers to complete all preparations within the next 15 days, stressing that broad public mobilisation would be essential to filling the venue. He added that effective leadership meant taking everyone along.

Speaking on the occasion, Faisal Mir said workers from all 10 towns of Lahore would participate in the rally, with each town assigned a target of bringing 10,000 supporters. He said 25 committees had been constituted to oversee various arrangements for the event. Mir also announced that a cake-cutting ceremony would be held on the night of July 25 to celebrate the birthday of President Asif Ali Zardari. PPP Lahore General Secretary Dr Ayesha Shaukat said she would work to justify the confidence reposed in her and expressed optimism about the party’s growing political position in Lahore. Senior PPP leader Majeed Ghouri said the party had regained momentum in Lahore under Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s leadership and expressed hope that the July 25 rally would demonstrate the PPP’s strength. He also said the party planned to display its flags on 10,000 rickshaws across the city.
