ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR’s) record-breaking tax haul a “milestone achievement” on Thursday after the agency smashed its annual collection target for the fiscal year 2025-26, while setting a fresh challenge to surpass an even steeper Rs15.264 trillion mark in the current fiscal year 2026-27.
Chairing a high-powered review meeting with senior FBR officials, the prime minister praised the tax authority for collecting more than the targeted Rs12.957 trillion during the last fiscal year, saying two-and-a-half years of reforms, aggressive digitisation and closer coordination had finally paid off.

The prime minister hailed FBR officers and staff “individually and collectively” for delivering what he described as unprecedented revenue figures.
He said the government’s release of nearly Rs600 billion in tax refunds during FY2025-26 had provided much-needed relief to businesses and helped boost exports. But the celebration came with a warning: Prime Minister Sharif vowed to step up efforts to widen the tax net, strengthen transparency and make compliance easier, signalling that the pressure for faster reforms is far from over.
