Israel: misleading narratives

EDITORIAL: Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation over its genocidal campaign in Gaza appears to have prompted attempts to shift attention away from the mounting international criticism of its conduct. Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent allegation that Pakistan-based “bot farms” are manufacturing anti-Israel sentiment online is not only unsubstantiated, but also indicative of a broader effort to portray worldwide outrage over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as the outcome of organised propaganda rather than genuine public concern.

The timing of these allegations is significant. Regional dynamics are undergoing an important shift as efforts to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran gather momentum. What once appeared to be a potentially devastating regional confrontation now seems to be moving cautiously towards de-escalation through diplomatic engagement in Islamabad.

Pakistan’s mediatory-facilitative role in encouraging dialogue and communication between the US and Iran has clearly not been accepted by circles that continue to favour confrontation and polarisation over diplomacy and regional stability.

In this context, the allegations carried by CBS News regarding Iranian military aircraft at Nur Khan Airbase deserve careful scrutiny. The report relied heavily on unnamed officials and speculative assertions while overlooking the diplomatic circumstances surrounding the Islamabad Talks process.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has categorically rejected the claims, explaining that aircraft movements were connected to the logistical requirements of ongoing diplomatic engagement involving Iranian and American delegations after the ceasefire announcement.

Significantly, the official explanation has also been supported by Caitlin Doornbos of the New York Post, who stated on social media that the account “checks out” based on her own reporting experience in Islamabad while waiting for round-two of the talks.

Equally, noteworthy are the broader concerns regarding editorial objectivity within sections of the Western media on the Middle East. Reports surrounding recent editorial changes at CBS News linked to Bari Weiss, a strongly pro-Israel media figure, have further fuelled perceptions that coverage of the region is increasingly shaped by ideological alignments rather than objective coverage of news and views.

At a time of heightened regional sensitivity, speculative reporting based on anonymous sources risks undermining fragile diplomatic efforts and contributing to further mistrust.

More fundamentally, however, attempts to attribute international criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza to foreign “bot farms” arise from unwillingness of Israeli leadership and its Zionist supporters in the US to confront the underlying reality. International concern has been driven by the scale of civilian suffering witnessed across Gaza.

Images of destroyed homes, hospitals, displaced families, and thousands of civilian deaths, including over 21,000 children, have generated outrage across political, religious and geographic divides. Such reactions cannot simply be dismissed as orchestrated disinformation campaigns.

Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue at a critical moment deserve recognition rather than allegations. In an increasingly polarised international environment, diplomacy and engagement remain essential for regional peace and stability. Facts, therefore, must not be sacrificed at the altar of geopolitical rivalries.
