KARACHI: Pakistan on Sunday formally launched the Pakistan-Iran transit corridor, marking a significant step towards enhancing regional trade connectivity, as the first export consignment was dispatched from Karachi to Tashkent.

The inaugural shipment, consisting of frozen meat departed from Karachi as part of the newly established route, which is expected to provide exporters with a more efficient and reliable land-based alternative for reaching Central Asian markets.

An opening ceremony was held in Karachi to mark the occasion, attended by customs officials and representatives of logistics companies. Participants described the initiative as a key development in strengthening trade links between Pakistan, Iran and Central Asia.

Under the new arrangement, goods will be transported through Iran using TIR trucks, allowing smoother cross-border movement and reducing delays typically associated with traditional routes.

Officials said the corridor would serve as a practical alternative for exporters seeking faster and more cost-effective delivery options.

The introduction of this route is expected to significantly reduce transit time and boost commercial activity by improving access to regional markets.

Authorities believe the corridor will open new opportunities for Pakistani exporters while contributing to broader economic cooperation in the region.

The successful dispatch of the first consignment is being seen as an important milestone, signalling Pakistan’s intent to expand its trade network and strengthen economic ties with neighbouring countries.
