KARACHI: Pakistan Stock Exchange witnessed a session of intense volatility on Wednesday, as the downward movement was primarily driven by a backdrop of mixed investor sentiment and pronounced volatility, which triggered selective profit-taking after the index hit a historic intraday peak.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index ended the day at 170,313.86 points marking a marginal retreat of 133.44 points or 0.08 percent from its previous close of 170,447.30. The market opened with an ambitious thrust, carrying the index to a historic session high of 171,392.63 points, yet this ascent faced immediate resistance that eventually pulled the benchmark down to an intraday low of 169,230.50 points.
On Wednesday, the BRIndex100 closed at 18,057.17, gaining 42.19 points or 0.23 percent over its previous close, supported by a total volume of 786.47 million shares. Similarly, the BRIndex30 finished at 59,228.02, marking an increase of 274.77 points or 0.47 percent, with a total trading volume of 457.48 million shares.
In its post-session commentary, Topline Securities noted that the market displayed pronounced volatility amid a backdrop of mixed investor sentiment. The session’s performance was largely dictated by specific heavyweights. Strength in UBL, NBP, HBL, AKBL, and PIOC underpinned positive momentum, collectively contributing a significant 771 points to the index. This substantial upside, however, was partly negated by profit-taking and declines in LUCK, OGDC, and ENGROH, which together subtracted 290 points from the benchmark.
Despite this slight headline dip, the underlying strength of the market remained evident as the total Market Capitalization managed to expand to Rs19.38 trillion, representing a net increase in investor wealth compared to the preceding day’s Rs19.37 trillion.
Liquidity in the regular market remained substantial, although the total Turnover saw a contraction to 1.07 billion shares, down from the previous session’s 1.18 billion shares. This cooling of activity was also reflected in the Traded Value, which dropped to Rs51.80 billion from over Rs53.47 billion.
The overall market breadth tilted toward the bears in the ready market, where 255 companies recorded declines against 178 that advanced, with 50 remaining unchanged out of a total of 483 active companies.
Individual stock activity was dominated by a few high-volume leaders and significant price swings. The Bank of Punjab led the turnover charts in the ready market with a massive 90.62 million shares traded, closing at 37.86. Hascol Petrol followed closely with 83.92 million shares, while other active names included TPL Corp Ltd (53.15 million shares), K-Electric Ltd. (43.68 million shares), and TPL Properties (38.09 million shares).
In terms of value appreciation, Nestle Pakistan Limited was the standout gainer, adding Rs49.03 points to close at Rs8,000.00, while Hafiz Limited rose by Rs47.18 points and close at Rs590.07. Conversely, PIA Holding Company Limited B suffered the day’s heaviest loss, dropping Rs130.00 to settle at Rs23,070.00, alongside Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited, which fell by Rs125.00 points and finished the day at Rs29,000.00.

Index also managed a fractional gain, edging up by 0.44 points or 0.01 percent to close at 4,151.82 with a substantial volume of 165.67 million shares.
The BR Oil and Gas Index declined by 127.75 points or 0.87 percent to close at 14,522.85 on a turnover of 138.21 million shares. The BR Cement Index followed suit, shedding 152.54 points or 1.07 percent to finish at 14,085.20 with 34.24 million shares changing hands.
The BR Automobile Assembler Index also saw a retreat, closing at 24,066.55 after a negative change of 75.39 points or 0.31 percent on a turnover of 4.06 million shares. Meanwhile, the BR Power Generation and Distribution Index remained virtually flat, closing at 27,381.28 with a negligible dip of 1.05 points on a turnover of 88.56 million shares.
Regarding the market’s immediate future, Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd., stated that going forward, the market is likely to consolidate around the 170k level over the next two sessions. However, a weekly close above 170k will be crucial to sustain momentum and reinforce the broader bullish trend.
