Job creation in the month was slightly less than analysts had forecast, but the unemployment rate improved over the previous month's 5.9 percent.

According to Statistics Canada, employment increased for both men and women aged 25 to 54.

Health care and social assistance led the employment gains, while Canada's wholesale, retail and manufacturing sectors shed jobs.

The public sector added jobs while the number of self-employed decreased.

In most parts of Canada, there was little overall change in employment. Only the Atlantic coastal provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia saw net job gains, while there was a decrease in employment in the prairie province of Saskatchewan.
