Nehal Hashmi released from prison after one month jail time

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) former Senator Nehal Hashmi was released on Wednesday from Adiala jail after being imprisoned for one month.

The Supreme Court (SC) on February 1 had barred Hashmi from holding public office for a period of five years.The three judge bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, had also slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on him. After SC's verdict Hashmi was taken into custody.

Hashmi's supporters were outside the jail to welcome him. Speaking to the media upon his release, Hashmi said that he had been made a victim of revenge.

During a fiery speech last year in May, Hashmi had threatened judges of apex court and joint investigation team members, probing offshore accounts of Sharif family. The SC had taken suo motu notice of his speech.

Hashmi had submitted an unconditional apology to SC. The bench, however, had raised objections on the words used in the submission and had dismissed it. The apology had stated, “If the court feels that I have committed contempt, I apologise.”
