OTTAWA: Canadians paid 1.7 percent more for goods and services in January than a year earlier, as prices went up across the board, the government statistical agency said Friday.
The figure was higher than analysts forecast, but represented a drop from 1.9 percent the previous month and 2.1 percent in November.
Shelter and transportation contributed most to the increase, according to Statistics Canada. This included price hikes for gasoline, passenger vehicles and food.
Telephone services costs, meanwhile, rebounded after dipping in December due to a series of industry-wide promotions, the agency said.
