Rising coronavirus cases: Five areas in Islamabad put under smart lockdown

(Karachi) In wake of surge in COVID-19 cases, five areas in Islamabad were put under a smart lockdown on Sunday, local media has reported.

As per details, Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat tweeted these areas will be sealed in the next 24 hours for “emerging as covid hotspots.” The areas that will be locked down include G-6/2, G-9/1, G-10/4, I-8/3, and I-8/4.

“Schools, Mosques, Shopping centers, parks etc will be closed,” he said. However, essential services and supplies like pharmacy, ration, drinking water and medical emergency, are exempted from the lockdown restrictions.

On Sunday, 1,436 people contracted coronavirus infection while 25 more fell prey to the disease while tests of 32,350 people were conducted. The figure of patients recovered from the virus has reached 318,417.

So far, coronavirus disease has claimed lives of 6,968 people. Since the pandemic outbreak, a total of 343,189 cases were detected, including Sindh reporting 149,542, Punjab 106,577, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 40,397, Balochistan 16,055, Islamabad 21,557, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 4,703, and Gilgit Baltistan 4,358.
