LAHORE: A trader was allegedly gunned down outside Madina Market on Hall Road late on Monday night, raising a big question mark over the provincial capital's law and order situation and favourable working environment for businessmen.

Police said that the trader, identified as Muhammad Asif, resident of Ghorray Shah locality, was shot dead by an unidentified armed person outside the Madina Market. They said the incident took place when Asif was leaving for home after closing down his shop. The victim died instantly.

According to CCTV footage aired by some private TV channels, an unidentified armed assailant by walking on foot allegedly came close to Asif and opened indiscriminate fire on him. The footage showed that the assailant first parked his motorbike on a walking distance and then came close to his target and then ran away. A stampede was also witnessed when the bullets were fired.

Police said it would be premature to say anything at this stage, but apparently it seems that Asif was killed over old enmity. However, they added, an FIR has been registered on the complaint of the victim's brother and further investigation is underway.
