Religious scholar, driver gunned down in Karachi

KARACHI: Unidentified men shot and killed a religious cleric and his driver in Karachi's Shah Faisal Colony Saturday night. Maulana Adil of Jamia Farooqia was inside the vehicle with his driver. He was the principal of Jamia Farooqia, a popular university of Islamic Studies in Shah Faisal.

On being informed, rescue officials and police rushed to the scene and shifted them to the hospital where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival. Maulana Adil was also teaching at Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi, which is the largest Deobandi Islamic seminary in Pakistan. Renounced religious scholar Malauna Saleemullah Khan, the founder of Jamia Farooqui, was his father. Maulana Adil completed a PhD in religious studies and had taught in Malaysia before returning to Karachi a few years ago after the death of his father.
