Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will commence its flight operations to Saudi Arabia from today (Tuesday) onwards.

Flights will depart from Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad carrying passengers to Saudi Arabia. PIA had started booking from September 15, after Saudi Arabia authorities announced that it will partially lift its suspension of international flights as of Sept. 15 to allow "exceptional categories" of citizens and residents to travel. The kingdom will scrap all travel restrictions on air, land, and sea transport for citizens on Jan. 1, 2021.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Saudi Aviation has limited PIA to 13 weekly flights. However, due to an unprecedented booking rush, PIA had sought permission from the Saudi administration for 28 more flights.

The requirement of 67pc social distance has been maintained on all PIA flights, informed the airline.

PIA has requested the Saudi government to extend the stay of the Iqama holder from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia. The stay is coming to an end on September 30, which is increasing the rush of bookers.

PIA spokesman Abdullah Khan said the PIA administration was in constant touch with Saudi officials. It is pertinent to mention that PIA will use Boeing 777 and Airbus 320 aircraft for Saudi Arabia flights.
