The challenge of reopening

Updated 21 Sep, 2020

The Sindh government has decided not to reopen schools for sixth, seventh and eighth graders due to possible spread of Covid-19 as educational institutes have failed to follow the required SOPs.

According to education minister Saeed Ghani, despite Sindh government's efforts, numerous flaws and violations have been witnessed after resumption of academic sessions in schools.

In my view, the Sindh government has acted wisely and prudently. The likelihood of further transmission of this deadly virus cannot be ruled out if infections are brought into schools by infected teachers, staff and students. Schools are therefore required to ensure observance of all Covid-19 SOPs, including limiting room occupancy and improving ventilation. Now is not the time to be complacent. It is true that nothing is more valuable than education. It's also true that nothing is more important than health.
