CCPO Lahore issues apology for blaming motorway gang-rape victim

  • He said if his statement has led to any misunderstanding, he then apologizes.

Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umer Sheikh issued an apology on Monday for putting the blame on the woman who was gang-raped in Lahore motorway last week.

The CCPO held a meeting today with Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar. Speaking to the media, Sheikh said that he had also apologized earlier for his remarks.

He said if any misunderstanding was caused because of his remarks, then he apologizes to 'my sister who was abused and to all sections of society who were saddened or angered by my statement.'

Earlier today, the Lahore High Court chief justice expressed his displeasure over Sheikh's remarks and summoned him. He said the entire Punjab cabinet should have apologised for the Lahore police chief's remarks.

The CCPO has already been issued a show-cause notice over his remarks by Inspector General of Police (IG) Inam Ghani.
