Salaries through cheques: Punjab govt working on legislation, says minister

LAHORE: Punjab minister for Labour and Human Resource Ansar Majeed Khan Niazi said on Friday that the government is working on the legislation to pay salaries of the workers through cheques. He was responding to questions regarding Labour and Human Resource on the floor of the House.

He admitted that a very small number of labourers' were registered with the labour department, especially the ratio of registration of labourers in Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad is very low. He said that the government is planning to register five lac labourers in Faisalabad. He also said only two lac labourers were registered in Faisalabad out of 10 lac labourers.

The session started two hours twenty three minutes late under the chair of deputy speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari. On the request of former speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal deputy speaker Sardar Dost Mazari pends the general discussion on law and order till Monday.

PPP parliamentary leader Syed Hassan Murtaza while speaking on the point of order criticized the Punjab government for the poor drainage system in Lahore. He said that the streets of Lahore were flooded after the torrential rains. Earlier, Hassan Murtaza said that the government should also focus on evolving a comprehensive policy for agriculture labourers along with industrial labour.

Earlier, Speaker Punjab Assembly Parvez Elahi accompanied by parliamentary leaders of all parties told the media on the occasion of inauguration of a new mosque in the Punjab Assembly, said, we should be talking about love, affection, tolerance, endurance and religious harmony.

Elahi said that legislation business is continuing with mutual cooperation in the people's welfare, new committees are also being constituted besides improving working of the standing committees which would work for the welfare, well-being and progress of the people and submit recommendations to the government which would produce good results. When media people asked Opposition Leader Hamza Shahbaz, whether he would like to say something, he said that whatever the Speaker has said is enough.
