(Karachi) Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood has said that the government is considering various proposals to resume educational activities across the country in phases.

He added that the final decision regarding the opening of schools will be taken on September 7 (Monday).

Addressing a press briefing in Islamabad on Friday, he said: "There is a proposal to resume classes of ninth and above from the 15th of this month."

The minister maintained that keeping in view the situation, the classes of six, seven and eight may be resumed a week after. "If the coronavirus situation remains better, the government might open the primary level schools from September 30."

Shafqat highlighted that children's health is government's top priority and no risk will be taken on the matter. "All educational institutions will be required to follow the SOPs," he stated.

He said number of students in a class will be reduced, which means that half of the students will attend the session one day and half will do it the other day. He pointed out that students will have to wear face masks at all times while social distancing and washing hands should be strictly implemented in all schools.

The education minister said all students attending school will get tested for coronavirus in two weeks.
