Karachi needs attention

04 Sep, 2020

Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to arrive in Karachi today to unveil his government's strategy on how to improve the situation in a badly battered and beleaguered Karachi. The other day, army chief, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, reportedly told a representative delegation of businesspeople from Karachi's trade and industry that the issues related to the country's economic hub's infrastructure and civic services will be resolved within three years. Three years, of course, is not a very long period. Moreover, three years constitute the remaining period of the five-year tenure of PTI government. The task is quite achievable provided it is backed by resolute political will.

Both the federal and provincial governments must work jointly to provide relief to the residents of this city. While red-tape needs to be dealt with accordingly other impediments to city's development must be removed through a well-coordinated strategy. There must be no complacency insofar as the challenges facing Karachi are concerned. Both the governments are required to work harder.
