Customs thwarts attempt to smuggle betel nuts

KARACHI: Model Customs Collectorate Appraisement, West on Tuesday claimed to have thwarted an attempt to smuggle betel nuts worth in million under the guise of tyre tubes.

According to details, the seizure was made on a tip-off which revealed that some unscrupulous elements were trying to clear betel nuts under the guise of tyre tube. Reacting on this information, the department has mounted stiff vigilance to thwart the attempt.

Sources said that the department has identified a consignment of two containers which was cleared through green channel. The importer has submitted a goods declaration, showing 520 sets of tyre tubes worth Rs. 12.38 million. However the customs department during physical examination recovered 53,000 kg of betel nuts worth Rs. 53.9 million, sources said.

Consequent upon recovery, the goods were seized and case has been registered against the importer. Further investigation is in progress.
