KARACHI: Model Customs Collectorate (MCC), Port Qasim, on Thursday claimed to have foiled an alleged attempt by an importer to evade paying duty and taxes to the tune of Rs3.7 million by wrongfully declaring a consignment of "polyester ladies fabric" as that of "mosquito textile mesh".

According to sources, the action was taken on a tip-off, which revealed that the said importer through his clearing agents allegedly wrongfully declared the consignment of "polyester ladies fabric" as "mosquito textile mesh" in order to evade paying duty and taxes.

Reacting to this information, the MCC Port Qasim ordered examination of the aforesaid consignment. Sources said that thorough examination of the consignment imported vide GD No.4571-21-07-2020 filed by M/s Capri Impex through their clearing agent M/s Rising Impex led to the said detection and added that the difference of duties and taxes is assessed to be Rs3.7 million. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the importer and his clearing agents.
