KARACHI: Gulzar Firoz, President Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA)'s Environment Society expressed that in coordination with UNIDO-GEF, an awareness raising campaign has been initiated on the eve of Eidul Azha (Qurbani Season) on save/preserve skins/hides and use of cleaner productions in leather processing for Karachi leather community.

The activity is a part of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) project named "Transforming Leather Processing Industries Towards Low Emissions and Climate Resilient Development Paths.

As Eidul Azha (Qurbani Season) is approaching and falling on 31st Jul to 2nd Aug 2020 respectively. Following the pandemic/lockdown situation, economic recession and current industrial conditions, will definitely affect the system of collection of skin/hides, dumping, storage and utilisation.

Despite of all manners, millions of animals will be slaughtered in religious zeal, therefore, awareness on Skin/Hides preservation is very important to keep this sector alive. In 2019 lack of awareness, hot weather and load shedding damaged around 25 percent hides of sacrificial animals on Eidul Azha, causing an estimated loss of about Rs1.5 billion to both tanneries and the hide dealers.
