Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon, along with 11 other suspects, was indicted on Thursday by an accountability court in Karachi regarding the corruption case against him.

Memon, along with others, is accused of allegedly embezzling Rs 5.76 billion to advertising agencies. According to local media reports, the hearing was held privately where no media and non-essential personnel were allowed.

After the court indicted the suspect, all the men pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption. Four of the indicted men raised an objection against the verdict of the court saying that they had not received the required documents. The court then adjourned the hearing, while statements of the witness will be recorded in the next hearing.

SC rejects Sharjeel Memon’s bail application

On October 23, Memon and 11 other suspects were taken into custody. They were also sent on judicial remand till November 4.

It was revealed that Rs 5.7 billion was paid to seven advertising companies, which was a violation of Sindh Public Procurement Rules 2010. Memon was accused of issuing contract to advertising agencies at excessive rates without confirming the market rates. This had resulted in the loss of more than Rs 5 billion.
