Taiwan stocks up

Published Updated

Taiwan shares closed 0.82 percent higher on Friday, helped by electronics issues after some companies reported better than expected August sales, though weaker sales from chipmaker UMC kept a lid on chip share gains. The main TAIEX index closed up 62.20 points at 7,610.57, after opening up 0.26 percent. The electronics sub-index rose 1.14 percent, while financial shares edged up 0.25 percent. Chip stocks rose 0.81 percent.
United Microelectronics Corp slipped 0.44 percent after posting a 24.7 percent drop in August sales. Rival TSMC however gained 0.87 percent ahead of sales results due after market close. Computer maker Acer Inc rose for a second consecutive session, up 5.25 percent, after a media report of new orders. The Taiwan dollar weakened 0.13 percent to T$29.189. Foreign investors were net sellers on Thursday, bringing their total selling to T$30.74 billion this month.
