The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index unofficially closed up 44.24 points, or 0.37 percent, at 12,119.33. Earlier, the index climbed 1.6 percent to 12,268.91, its highest level since Nov. 16, on optimism that European policymakers were on their way to designing a plan to resolve the euro zone's debt crisis.
