NRO and loans written off issues: Nawaz sees historic judgements
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Quaid Mohammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed the hope that independent judiciary would hold plunderers accountable by giving historic judgements on NRO and loans written off issues. He said this while talking to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, NWFP Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti and Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani - who called on him at his Raiwind residence.
Senator Ishaq Dar was also present on the occasion. Nawaz said the black laws such as the NRO and the writing off of loans are like making a mockery of the nation as such steps have caused disappointment and anger at large. "The PML-N supports the setting up of an independent commission for accountability as agreed with Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto," he said, adding that nobody should be above the law and there must be an across-the-board accountability in the country.
All the Chief Ministers on the occasion called for rooting out extremism and foreign interventions. Sources said the CMs also shared their views with Nawaz on the country's current political and economic situation. Nawaz said major responsibility lies on central government in this respect. "Primarily, it is an obligation of the government to expose foreign interventions and ensure the country's sovereignty," he said, adding that otherwise upcoming generations would never forgive us.
"If there is Indian intervention, proof must be presented before the world," he stressed, adding that extremism is one of the "injuries" given by a dictator. The PML-N Quaid said "We are supporting the government to strengthen the country as well as democracy but it is also the obligation of the government to play effective role for restoration of law & order in the country and resolution of issues agreed to among political forces." He said the nation is passing through a difficult time and looking towards rulers.
He said failure of democratic government is also not tolerable. If the democratic government fails, it would provide an opportunity to undemocratic forces for adventurism that would be unacceptable. Nawaz said the country's situation would be altogether different, had there been rule of law, supremacy of Constitution and the government implemented the Charter of Democracy (CoD) in letter and spirit.
On Balochistan situation, the PML-N Quaid said it was necessary to take people of Balochistan and their leadership into confidence on this issue for finding a political solution to the problem. He added that only financial package is no solution to the Balochistan problem. The need is to award punishment to killers of Nawab Bugti apart from preparing a comprehensive policy for bringing people of Balochistan into the mainstream, he added.
