Sterling nears $1.30, hits highest in almost 8 months

As the greenback fell across the board and safe-haven currencies soared, Britain's pound climbed 0.6 percent to trade as high as $1.2991, its strongest since Sept. 30.

It was flat against the euro but down 1.3 percent against the yen as the Japanese currency surged as worries over Trump dampened investors' appetite for risk.
