Eminent Sindhi poet Tanveer Abbasi received profuse praise at a memorial held on Saturday evening at the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL). Three Sindhi literary organisations, namely, Shah Abdul Latif Cultural Organisation, Sindhi Adabi Sunggat, Sindh Graduates Association worked to organise this literary meeting.
A book 'Tanveer Abbasi: Life and his work,' with a lot of useful information about this poet, writer and intellectual, was also launched on this occasion.
A number of literary organisations of the capital city laid flower wreaths on Tanveer Abbasi's grave in the morning. President of the moot, Dr Soomro, observed that Abbasi was a popular poet, writer and intellectual in Sindhi language, but he was also true to his ideals, never neglected them. His research, especially on Shah Latif's poetry was unique and it was well received by all shades of critics.
Another speaker, Dr Nawazish Ali Shauq said that Tanveer's poetry sprinkled with rhythms of life of his native Sindh, and his deep attachment to Shah Latif and Sachal Sarmast. He also carried their message in his mystic verses. Tanveer's death is a loss to Sindhi literature.
Bukhtiar Malik saw light as symbol reflecting Tanveer's emotional life that pervaded in his poetry. He transfers this inheritance of light for the coming generation and it should be duty of the youth also to transfer his legacy to more people.
Tanveer's wife, Dr Qamar Tanveer Abbasi described her husband more as a friend than husband, and he would always fought for her rights.
For his daughter, Paris Abbasi, the father's life was all happiness and it was his aim to give happiness to others. Irshad Abbasi, and Irshad Nabi Abbasi also spoke on this occasion. Zahid Jatoi conducted the function. Mukhtar Talpur said that Tanveer Abbasi continued to play an active role in the resistance movement in Sindhi Adabi Sunggat. He was a humanist in his thoughts and behaviour.
Qasim Haider said that Tanveer Abbasi loved his soil very much but these patriotic emotions became vast to international level.
Dr Saim Ali Somro said that Tanveer Abbasi's poetry remained intact with the classical tradition of literature beside being in harmony with the modern trends.
Iftikhar Arif, speaking on the occasion, said Tanveer Abbasi had done meritorious job not only in Sindhi literature but Equally, he was also a good apprentice in Urdu and English, besides being a poet of Sindhi language with his unique style. He also had a mystric strain in his poetry.
Iftikhar Arif said that Dr Tanveer Abbasi was born in a town Sobhorderoo situated in the state of Khairpur in December 7, 1934. He died in Islamabad in November 25, 1999. He passed matriculation from Govt High School, Hyderabad in 1951 and he was a student of first year in D J College in Karachi and passed inter from Govt Medical College Jamshoro in 1953. He acquired MBBS degree from Liaqat Medical College Jamshoro in 1960. He said that Dr Tanveer Abbasi remained associated with Bazm-e-Sufia-e-Sindh, Bazm-e-Khalil, Hyderabad, Sindhi Adabi Sunggat, Sindh Forum, Sachal Sarmast Yadgar Committee, Poetry Society London, Sachal Chair, Pakistan writers Guild, Shah Abdul Latif University and many other organisations.
He said Dr Tanveer Abbasi was also given away Writers Guild award, Institute of Sindhala Ji Award, Sachal Sarmast Award, Sindh Graduates Association Gold Medal, Lateef Academy Medal, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Narian Shiaam Award, India, Sindhi Adabi Sunggat AQward, Shah Abdul Latif Excellence Award and Pride of Performance.
