Pakistan is set to opt for democracy in its cricket set-up and to leave behind its ad-hoc arrangements, an official said Saturday. "Pakistan cricket will now be run in a democratic way after the sports ministry has announced the implementation of the new constitution," Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Nasim Ashraf told reporters.
Pakistan cricket has been run by ad-hoc bodies since July 1999 - something described by technocrats and players as the root cause of problems in the game. The country's sports ministry on Friday announced that President Pervez Musharraf, who is also the patron of the PCB, has approved the PCB's new constitution, which paves way for change.
Ashraf said the new constitution will be implemented by next month - describing it as a historic achievement. "The new constitution will be implemented by next month. A governing board of 15 members would be constituted involving all the stakeholders in Pakistan cricket to oversee board affairs," said Ashraf. Ashraf said all regions will be given representation in the new set-up while two former cricketers will also serve in the governing body.
