Stormers have been rocked by long-term injuries to three Test centres, Juan de Jongh and Damian de Allende of South Africa and Huw Jones of Scotland.

"Having lost Damian, Juan and Huw we needed experience in midfield," Stormers director of rugby and former Springbok Gert Smal told reporters Monday.

"I am sure Shaun will have a positive impact on the Stormers during his time with us."

Treeby was part of the Otago Highlanders side that shocked fellow New Zealanders Wellington Hurricanes in the 2015 Super Rugby final.

The 28-year-old centre was negotiating a new contract with the Dunedin outfit when he broke his ankle last year.

Stormers are one of three Super Rugby teams boasting 100 percent records after six rounds this season and host another, Waikato Chiefs of New Zealand, Saturday.
