HEC launching e-book programme

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is launching e-book programme, for students to access various books to read and download the text. Professor Dr Ata-ur-Rehman, Chairman HEC and Advisor to the Prime Minister on Science and Technology said this at conference on 'Cyber Technology: Issues, Challenges and Development' organised by Institute of Business and Technology (Biztek) here on Friday.
He said that the e-program, which was operational as pilot project, would be formally launched between July 15 to 20. The program is providing access to about 4,000 books that is available for download or can be searched through search engines, he said. Pakistan has majority of youth that can play a vital role in the economic activities particularly in the field of Information and Technology, he said.
He said that in coming days several big names could emerge from the lot of this youth. But the need was to provide guidelines and give education them for better future, he added.
He said that Pakistan is far behind in economic growth as compared with other countries. He quoted examples of Singapore, Austria, Japan and other countries where population is less than Pakistan's population but their exports was even better than us. He said that education was the only was to achieve sustained growth of any country.
He said that in the first time of history the government has realised the need and raised 200 percent budget for promotion of higher education. He said that HEC had initiated several projects to generate brilliant students and first time 1,000 PhDs had been offered in various countries.
On the occasion Ali Abidi, Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Information Technology said that the provincial government was providing all needs for the promotion of education in the country.
