Cases of gastro-enteritis continue to register a steady surge in all parts of the province, Deputy Secretary for Public Health Sindh, Dr Shakil Malik told APP here on Saturday. The official responsible to compile data on daily basis said that 731 gastro-enteritis cases were reported at different government healthcare facilities of Karachi only on one single day.
42 of the patients were in a comparatively serious condition and had to be admitted, he said mentioning that they pertained to different age groups. Gastro-enteritis cases reported from interior parts, from Saturday morning till afternoon, came to 908 including 194 admissions. To a question, he said 268 cases were reported from Thatta only while those from all other districts were in double figures.
Dr Shakil Malik said arrangements to handle these cases were intact in all government facilities and there is no dearth of required medications as well as other related medical support.
"Staffers have been put on alert and leave of essential staff has been cancelled to ensure their presence at all government healthcare institutions," he said. With a view to further strengthen its capacity Unicef and WHO have been requested to provide additional amount of anti-diarrhoeal medicines.
