'Meaningless' elections

Published June 30, 2007 Updated June 30, 2007 12:00am

Though the elections should be fair, but most important thing is that whether our masses have real awareness about the importance of elections and democracy or have they reached such mental level where they can decide whether people they are going to elect will do well for the country. Frankly speaking, I don't think so.
Even the fair elections in Pakistan will do no good for the country. The fair elections will bring people like Benazir, Sharif, Qazi, Fazal-ur-Rehman, Chaudhrys, Amin Fahim, Zardari, Ishaq Dar etc, who have already done damage to this country.
I think we should follow Malaysia's model, which under the sincere leadership of Mahatir changed the fate of Malaysia, where people are more educated and aware than 20 years ago and now they have introduced democracy, as people are now well aware to elect their leaders.
In case of Pakistan, I will suggest that President Musharraf should be given free hand under presidential system and as Pakistan is growing by leaps and bounds under his dynamic leadership and such growth should continue for at least next ten years, when people of Pakistan will be more educated and well aware and economically well off. After that democracy can be introduced. Talking of even fair elections in today's scenario will do no good for the country. We should carry on with Musharraf.
