SC bans ‘Qingqi’ rickshaws

The Supreme Court has put a ban on the use of illegal Motorcycle-Rickshaw better known as ‘Qingqi rickshaws’ across the country, a local transportation where a motorbike pulls a wagon which can carry up to six passengers.

According to media reports, a two-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed in its order directed: “Besides approved Qingqi rickshaws, no other rickshaws shall be allowed to operate.”

Justice Gulzar said that the government had no official data about illegal Qingqi rickshaws. “The government had launched Metro Bus, Green Bus, and Orange Line transport services across the country, but at the same time the streets are full of these Qingqi.”

Justice Gulzar Ahmed also clarified that the ban on illegal Qingqi rickshaws was being imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan.

Acknowledging the implications of its decision, the court urged the government to resolve the issue and ensure that people do not lose their sources of income.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) had previously ordered legal action against Qingqis in the province.
