The government on Thursday opposed to pass a new resolution in the National Assembly stressing on the British government to withdraw knighthood awarded to controversial writer Salman Rushdie.
On a point of order, MMA lawmaker Liaquat Baloch said the House should pass a fresh resolution asking the British government to withdraw the title awarded to the controversial writer. Both, National Assembly and Senate have already passed separate resolutions condemning the British government for encouraging writer Salman Rushdie, who hurt the feeling of the Muslim Ummah across the world by writing a controversial book in 1989.
Baloch regretted that the British government did not take back the knighthood, despite the fact that Muslim Ummah around the world expressed their serious resentment. He demanded of the government to pass a fresh resolution seeking withdrawal of the title instead of tendering a simple apology.
Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs said that this august House has already passed a resolution expressing serious concerns against this act of the British government and there is no need to bring any fresh resolution on the same issue.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain President Pakistan Muslim League said that the entire Muslim Ummah regretted the act saying that the writer should be named as thief and mad instead of 'Sir'. Dr Attaur Rehman of MMA said that it is right time for the government to suspend its support to the US and UK for war against terror.
