Chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Defence, Senator Nisar A. Memon has stressed for fast-track development in Malir and other rural areas of the city declaring these as the backbone of Karachi. Strengthening and modernising of agriculture in Malir and Gadap towns would also help bring socio-economic uplift not only in this once a rich belt of the region but would provide a big source of food for entire Karachi.
"In the past, Malir belt was a main source of vegetable, fruit and other food items for Karachi," he recalled while speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of new body of Malir Press Club on Saturday evening. Politicians, government functionaries, social workers and elite of from Malir, Gadap and Bin Qasim Towns besides journalists attended the event.
Senator said these rural areas had also a great potential for industrialisation; with mineral deposits and low-cost labour force. Being a senator, he offered his services in resolution of the problems facing people in these less developed centuries-old localities by lobbying at provincial and federal governments level, and the parliament. "I request you all.
Give me timely and worked-out feedback to facilitate my role in this regard," he addressed the gathering representing different sections of the society.
Listing the achievements of the present government including 7 percent GDP growth and high rate of development, he noted that there were still many social and economic problems/ issues to be addressed through joint efforts.
The former information minister urged journalistic community to react according to aspirations of the masses and safeguard their interests especially of the oppressed ones.
He advised them to do more research and detailed studies particularly on those issues influencing the integrity, prosperity, defence and honour of the country. Being the 4th pillar, the media has great moral and legal obligations. Media can also play a big role in strengthening democracy in the country.
