In an emergent meeting called at SITE Association office on Saturday on intervention of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal to discuss the short supply of water from the available sources at Karachi Water and Sewerage Board end. It was resolved that KW&SB would augment the supply and bring the supply to 8 MGD without fail within one week.
Personal assurance in this respect was given by Anwer Saeed, Superintending Engineer, WTM/KW&SB. Imran Shaukat presided over the meeting wherein the Representatives of KW&SB, SITE Limited and SITE Association office-bearers were present.
They discussed the acute short supply of water to SITE area and presented proof that the supply to area in the last fifteen days averaging between 2.5mgd to 4.7 MGD against the allocated quota of 8 MGD, which was even admitted by the Engineers of KW&SB.
Anwer Saeed said the team of KW&SB on the directives of City Nazim is engaged day and night to augment the water supply from 24" dia connection at Banaras Chawk and would be in a position to augment it from 3 MGD to 5 MGD within one week's time. Thereafter, the KW&SB authorities would stand committed to supply 8 MGD (5 plus 3 mgd from other five connections) water to SITE area.
On the question of breakage of water supply to SITE area it was reported that KW&SB has not sufficient generators to continue supply without break due to the electricity problems.
Shaukat further said Governor of Sindh during his visit to SITE Association of Industry on May 31,2006 had issued directives to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to ensure supply of allocated quota of water (ie 8 MGD) to SITE Ltd.
He had also announced to enhance the quota of water from 8 MGD to 12 MGD on the commissioning of K-III Project, but neither the quota of water has been increased nor the allocated quota of water is being supplied to the SITE area.
He took a serious note of negligence on the part of KW&SB engineers and staff engaged in supply of water to SITE area. He said he was not ready to listen to any lame excuses of technical nature.
He advised the KW&SB engineers to get repaired 25 leakages, 6 leakages on 48" dia connection along Manghopir Road, 11 leakages on 24" dia connection along Estate Avenue, 5 leakages on 12" dia connection and 8" dia connection in Niazi Colony and installation of meter at Regent Cinema (Nazimabad) and arrange generators on war footing to insure 8 MGD water supply to SITE area without fail.
He said the requirement of the industries in SITE area is 20mgd whereas the balance is being made up by the industries by purchasing Water Tankers at extremely high rates. He said more than 5 lakh workers are working in industries. They nor have water for drinking purposes neither for ablution, if they come out from the factories, KW&SB would have to face them, he added.
