Ghulam Ishaq Khan passes away

A former President of Pakistan, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, died here on Friday at the age of 91. He was suffering from pneumonia for the last three months. Ghulam Ishaq Khan (GIK) became President of Pakistan following death of Zia-ul Haq in a plane crash on August 17, 1988.
Before becoming President, GIK served the country in important positions as Cabinet Secretary, Federal Finance Minister and Senate Chairman. His Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) was held at Ladies Club, University Town, at 5pm.
Prominent among those who attended the Namaz-e-Janaza were Shujaat Hussain, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, Amir Muqaam, Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Gohar Ayub Khan.
President Ghulam Ishaq Khan was an ethnic Pashtun, born in district Bannu. He leaves behind the widow, four daughters and one son. Political figures, relatives and people from all over the province started gathering at his residence for condolence after hearing the news of his demise.
APP ADDS: NWFP Governor Ali Muhammad Jan Aurkazai, Ijazul Haq, Salim Saifullah Khan, Sardar Muhammad Rind, Khalilur Rehman, Mirza Aslam Baig, Samiul Haq, GG Jamal, Ilayas Bilour, Farooq Ahmed Laghari, and Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Hamid Khan, besides scores of legislatures, diplomats, academicians, media professionals and people from all sections of the society also attended funeral prayers.
They later offered Fateha with his son and his son-in-law Anwar Saifullah Khan. MD State Bank Liaquat also attended the funeral and laid floral wreath on the grave of Ghulam Ishaq Khan on behalf of the Governor of State Bank of Pakistan.
