Pakistan and Afghanistan have signed an accord under which the former will provide high-tech communication equipment, small arms and vehicles for patrolling at an estimated cost of over $3 million.
The agreement was signed in Kabul during Interior Minister, Faisal Saleh Hayat's 3-day official visit to Afghanistan.
Briefing newsmen at a press conference here on Wednesday about his Afghanistan tour, Faisal said that Pakistan has committed over $1.5 million in first phase of the project.
He said that equipment as well as training to Afghan police officials would be given for patrolling the Motorways being constructed from Kabul to Ghazni, Kandahar, Chaman, Jalalabad, and Torkham.
Besides this, Pakistan will provide all possible help to Afghanistan and an assistance of $100 million has already been extended for the reconstruction of the country, he said.
The Minister said that during his visit both Pakistan and Afghanistan inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to uproot terrorism, eliminate drug trafficking and human smuggling through border areas.
"We have also agreed to establish a hotline at Interior Secretaries level to share information for controlling drug smuggling, he said.
Pakistan has offered to impart modern know-how to the Anti-Narcotics Officials of Afghan Interior Ministry to successfully deal with the drug mafia, Hayat remarked.
It was also decided that the Interior Ministers of Pakistan and Afghanistan would meet at least once in six months either in Kabul or Islamabad to discuss issues regarding the menace of terrorism, operations against Taleban/al Qaeda men hiding in tribal areas of NWFP and narcotics trafficking, he added.
Apart from this, the Interior Secretary level talks are also planned on quarterly basis to assist both countries to address these critical issues, he said.
Faisal said that during his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai he informed the President about the ongoing Wana operation and proposed several measures for patrolling of 2500 km Pak-Afghan border.
He said that details for establishing a 'Contact Point' at specific place near Pak-Afghan border are being worked out to share the necessary intelligence with regard to terrorist elements.
The Interior Minister said that he informed Karazi about Pakistan's concerns regarding the armed warlords in NWFP tribal belt.
About October polls in Afghanistan, Faisal said that both countries have agreed on registration of Afghan refugees in Pakistan to facilitate them to take part in the presidential elections.
The Minster said that out of 750 Pakistanis, nearly 450 were still languishing in Afghan jails and they would be released soon.
He said a friendship gate has been constructed near Chaman border that would be formally inaugurated by the Pak-Afghan Interior Ministers to further strengthen the existing cordial relation between the two countries.
