TOKYO: Japanese stocks closed slightly higher on Thursday, up 0.34 percent, despite worse-than-expected core machinery

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed up 29.71 points at 8,793.12. The broader Topix index of all first-section issues added 3.78 points, or 0.50 percent, at 757.41.
