Stocks saw choppy trade and closed below intraday highs Monday after Wall Street closed solidly higher last week with sentiment lifted by central bank chief Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 53.57 points to 8,851.35. The Topix index closed 0.37 percent higher, gaining 2.76 points to 758.83.
