tokyoTOKYO: Tokyo share prices closed up 0.61 percent Monday after Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda was elected leader of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, making him set to become the nation's new premier.

Stocks saw choppy trade and closed below intraday highs Monday after Wall Street closed solidly higher last week with sentiment lifted by central bank chief Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 53.57 points to 8,851.35. The Topix index closed 0.37 percent higher, gaining 2.76 points to 758.83.
